Lake Tekapo

Updated: Dec 7, 2023

Lake Tekapo is the second largest of three parallel lakes running along the northern edge of the Mackenzie Basin (the others are Lake Pukaki and Lake Ohau). It's 83Km2 and 710m above sea level. Picturesque by day and dazzling by night, Lake Tekapo is part of a UNESCO Dark Sky Reserve, making it the perfect spot for stargazing. About 3hours drive south-west of Christchurch, the township faces north across the remarkable turquoise coloured lake to the mountainous vista of the Southern Alps. The astonishing colour of the lake is caused by the glacier-ground rock suspended in the water. Besides the lake the main attractions here are The Church of Good Shepherd, The Sheepdog Memorial, and Tekapo Springs.
