The largest city in the South Island, third in New Zealand behind Auckland & Wellington, Christchurch lies on the east coast, just north of the Banks Peninsula. Devastated by an earthquake in 2011, it is now largely rebuilt having bounced back energetically with innovative new attractions as well as old favourites. Visit the transitional Cardboard Cathedral and some of the many pop up restaurants, bars & shops. Contemporary art galleries, boutique shops and open-air markets add to Christchurch's creative vibe. Christchurch is the gateway to the South Island. You can ski, bungy jump, hike, mountain bike, raft, surf, swim, golf, see whales, dolphins and seals, visit wineries and gardens, shop, be entertained and so much more, all within 2 hours of the city.
