After the volcano explosion in December 2019 the White Island is closed for visitors for an indefinite period.
New Zealand's most energetic volcano & the only active marine volcano, White Island lies 48Km off the east coast in the Bay of Plenty. Take a trip from Whakatane or Tauranga and watch steaming vents and crater lakes that change colour and size almost daily. A hostile environment, White Island is a protected private scenic reserve, roughly 2Km in diameter & rises 321m above sea level - quite a hike in this terrain! The waters surrounding White Island are known for their fishing for kingfish, tuna and marlin.
