From crystal clear streams & the deepest natural spring in the North Island - Haumurana Springs - to epic mountain bike trails & hiking through the Whakarewarewa Forest, Rotorua has it all. But it is primarily famous for being a geothermal paradise. A faint sniff of sulphur and escaping curls of steam are the first hints of Rotorua's dramatic geothermal character. Hells Gate is NZ's unique Maori owned geothermal & cultural mud bath spa experience with erupting waters, steaming fumaroles & boiling mud. Te Puia is home to the NZ Maori Arts and Crafts Institute and the world famous Pohutu geyser. As well as witnessing this natural phenomenon erupt up to 20 times a day to heights of 30 metres, visitors have an opportunity to see Maori cultural performances, live kiwi, boiling mud pools, native bush and the National Schools of Wood Carving and Weaving.
