Waitomo Ruakuri Cave
500 years ago a young Maori hunting for birds was attacked by wild dogs just outside the cave entrance & so stumbled upon this gem which leave you awe-struck by the majesty of nature. Ruakuri (rua means den and Kuri means dog in Maori) Cave is New Zealand’s longest guided underground walking tour and because of some clever and innovative design is fully wheelchair accessible. Travel down the spectacular spiral entrance to experience a captivating blend of Waitomo’s most compelling subterranean experiences. Admire the softly folding limestone formations and crystal tapestries, as well as the rising & falling rock formations. Get right up close to the glowworms in the roof of the cave, so bring your camera & your youngest kids!
