Day Tour in Small Group Auckland - Waitomo - Rotorua - Auckland
This full-day sightseeing tour has it all. Experience magical glowworms and living limestone formations at Waitomo caves and the rich Maori heritage and geothermal energy of Rotorua. Leaving Auckland at 7:00, journey into the heart of the North Island, travelling through the lush green farmland of the Waikato and King Country regions. Be entertained and informed by your driver guide’s commentary, who will point out highlights of the region, like Rangiriri, where a major battle was fought in 1863 between British forces and those loyal to the Maori King.
At the small town of Waitomo, you’ll take a 45-minute guided tour past stunning cave formations and learn how stalactites, stalagmites and other limestone structures were formed over 30 million years go in awesome caverns that used to be part of an ancient seabed. And you’ll take a boat ride through the Glowworms grotto, gliding silently along the underground river as you admire the luminescent glowworms overhead, like millions of tiny stars in the night sky! (Comfortable walking shoes and a warm jacket recommended for the caves.)
The only living geothermal Maori village, Whakarewarewa is gifted with geothermal vents that provide life-giving and sustaining energy resources. You will experience an authentic living Maori village where people use natural geothermal resources to cook, bathe and heat their homes. You will learn about the vibrant Maori culture and the traditions of your hosts, the Tuhourangi/Ngati Wahiao tribe. At a Maori cultural performance by one of the leading Kara Hake Groups you’ll hear traditional song and dance & witness the fearsome Hake. From the communal outdoor living area (Rahui) & the Wahiaoour ancestral meeting place, to the pre-school (Kohanga Reo) which played its part in revitalising the Maori language, and the village cemetery of both Catholic and Anglican churches (the missionary influence), your Maori experience will be almost complete. The final element will be the Hangi meal, with foods traditionally cooked in the natural steam vents and hot pools. Yumm!
A group will come back to Auckland in the evening but you may stay in Rotorua if you have further plans in this unique place. In this case a driver will drop you off at a hotel of your choice.
