The Abel Tasman National Park is New Zealand's only coastal national park located between Golden Bay and Tasman Bay at the north end of the South Island. The nearest city is Nelson. The park is named after Abel Tasman, who in 1642 became the first European explorer to sight New Zealand and who anchored nearby in Golden Bay. Its golden sandy beaches and clear turquoise water make it one of the most popular and accessible parks. To explore it you can walk into the Park from Marahau, take a cruise to one of the many beaches along the Coastal Track, sea-kayak from various beaches or fly and be dropped off at Awaroa Bay.
